Vaka Eiva 20th Anniversary: Celebrating History, Present & Future

The Cook Islands Canoeing Association (CICA) is proud to announce the 20th Anniversary milestone of Vaka Eiva. This November, the “heartbeat of the Pacific” returns to the shores of Rarotonga for a historic week-long celebration. From its launch in 2004 with a vision to revive our Oe’ Vaka heritage, Vaka Eiva has grown into a global phenomenon—blending sport, deep-rooted culture, and island community in a way that only the Cook Islands can.

Vaka Eiva’s inclusive spirit has been its hallmark for two decades. We remain a festival for all, welcoming paddlers from our “Oe Mapu” (juniors) to our revered Platinum Masters in their 70s plus. From the power of lagoon sprints for our juniors to the legendary 36km Round Raro Relay, the 2026 program offers a challenge for every soul—from first time paddlers to experienced Va’a teams. Solo paddlers and teams alike will find something to inspire them.

Culture is not just a backdrop at Vaka Eiva; it is our compass. Our 20th year begins with the sacred Akatapu Vaka (blessing of the vaka), a tradition that has grounded every race since our inaugural start. Throughout the week, the rhythm of the paddle is matched by the beat of the drum, featuring traditional Ura performances, local cuisine, and artisans. This year, our trophies and merchandise will feature our exclusive 20th-anniversary motif, honoring the carvers and voyagers who laid our path.

Vaka Eiva belongs to the people of the Cook Islands. Our 2026 “Vaka Village” will be more vibrant than ever, featuring paddle art exhibitions and trade days that showcase the ingenuity of our local small businesses. A crowd favourite, the  Boiler Swim returns—a community tradition where your donation helps fund our local Junior clubs, ensuring the next 20 years of paddling excellence are secure.

As we celebrate 20 years on the water, our commitment to the environment has never been stronger. Vaka Eiva 2026 continues to lead in sustainability, from our “plastic-free” filtered water stations to our “Legacy Cleanups.” In partnership with local eco-warriors, CICA ensures that the pristine turquoise waters we race in today are protected for the paddlers of tomorrow.

For our paddlers, Va’a is a way of life. It is a sport that heals the mind and strengthens the body. The camaraderie found on the water—forged over 20 years of international friendships—offers a sense of peace and accomplishment that stays with participants long after they leave our shores.

Beyond the reef, Vaka Eiva continues to be a vital pillar of the Cook Islands economy. By drawing international crews during the shoulder season, the festival provides a significant boost to our local tourism family. This year, we are thrilled to welcome approximately 1000+ international visitors, whose presence supports our local economy, creating a ripple effect of prosperity across the island.
